The Red Raiders (1-1-1) fell in overtime Monday afternoon to Olivet Nazarene University, 1-2.
The Raiders started out well in the first half and adjusted well to the high pressure from the Tigers. The Tigers wanted to put the Raiders under pressure early and often but Northwestern was able to build out and posses fairly well in the first 20 minutes.
The positive possession came to benefit the Raiders on the board in the 22nd minute when Northwestern lost possession in the attacking third of the field but did a great job winning the ball back and with two quick, one touch passes later, saw
Molly Ryan one on one with the keeper. She calmly put the ball under the keeper's arm for her first career collegiate goal.
Julie Dunlap had the final ball through on the play for an assist. It was her first career collegiate assist.Â
Olivet Nazarene would turn up the pressure after the goal and really started to lock the Raiders into their own half. Although the pressure went up, the match stayed 1-0 at the half.
The Tigers again came out with high pressure but the Raiders could not possess the way they needed to put the Tigers under and in turn, ONU created a plethora of chances in the first ten minutes of the second half. Olivet's persistence would pay off in the 56th minute as another cross was hit in by Julia Schindler and this time, Emily Hulliberger was able to sneak back post and head home the cross.
The Raiders would bounce back as the game would start to go back and forth a bit more but the Raiders could not generate the chances needed to put away the Tigers and the match would head to overtime.
The energy for both teams increased in the overtime period and they energy bubble over too much for Jeanine Valera as she would get tangled up with Dunlap on the ground and kick her while trying to get up. The straight red card saw the Raiders go up a player but the Tigers would capitalize on a free kick just outside the Raider box. Abby Cash would capitalize on the lose ball and finish off the match with a tap in.
The Raiders move to 1-1-1 on the year while ONU stays undefeated at 2-0. Northwestern will travel to Illinois to take on Trinity Christian College (September 5) and St. Xavier (September 7).Â
