Men's Soccer Hosts Viterbo to Kickoff 2019 Season

The Red Raider men's soccer team looks to go three straight seasons with ten wins as they begin their 2019 season at home Tuesday against Viterbo University (Wis.). The Raiders were 10-7-2, 6-3-2 GPAC, in 2018 and finished 6th in the GPAC regular season standings and falling to Briar Cliff University (Iowa) in the GPAC Quarterfinals.

Northwestern returns four consistent starters from its 2018 squad: Ben Hengst (Sr., Cedarburg, Wisc.), Anselmo Kim (Sr., London, England), Mateus Freitas (So., Natal, Brazil), Chris Ten Pas (Jr., Oostburg, Wisc.).  Head Coach Dan Swier gave had this to say about the returning group; "We graduated a lot of key players from last season's team but feel great about the leadership that these players will provide to our newcomers.  They are not just strong players, but strong leaders as well.  They have created a very professional environment and have displayed high levels of commitment to the team already this pre-season."

Coach Swier and assistant Adam Potter have brought in a very solid recruiting class to complement the returners.  There are 18 new faces in the squad this fall and many will be contributing in key roles on the field.  With a mix of four junior college transfers and fourteen new freshmen, the team will have a new look in 2019.  "We have some major roles to fill with new players this season," commented Swier; "and we feel as though the quality of this incoming class will ease the transition.  Our number one objective is to bring these guys together as one team with the same purpose."

2019 Recruiting

Once again, the Raiders will navigate a challenging non-conference schedule that includes three of the top programs in the NAIA.  Coach Swier had this to say about the schedule; "Our philosophy is that growth happens when we put ourselves in uncomfortable situations.  When it comes to scheduling, we feel that the best growth happens when we play quality opponents.  We have our work cut out for us again this season."
