Eight-Run Fourth Inning Leads To Game Two Win

An eight-run, fourth-inning lifted Northwestern past Midland 9-1 (5) in game two of a conference doubleheader played this afternoon at Christensen Field in Fremont, Neb. The Red Raiders lost game one 6-2 and end the regular season with an 11-11 league record, 18-23 overall. 

Scoreless heading into the fourth, the Red Raiders totaled six hits, took advantage of two Midland errors and sent 12 batters to the plate in the eight-run inning. Bri Giordano (2-run double), Emily Strasser (RBI single), Madison Beaver (RBI double), Jordyn Kramer (RBI single), Emily Bosch (RBI triple) all delivered big hits in the inning.

Strasser added an RBI single in the top of the fifth, scoring Kelsey Den Hartog, to put Northwestern up 9-0. Midland came through with its lone run in the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run by Sierra Athow.

Northwestern totaled nine hits, led by Strasser who went 3-for-3 and drove in two. Devin Dreesen hit two singles as well. Emma Schnell (11-14) limited Midland to three hits and one run in five innings, striking out five. 

Hailee Filam (7-4) took the loss, giving up seven hits and three earned runs in 3.2 innings. Athow led the Warriors with two hits and scored the only run. 

Game one went in Midland's favor behind the strong pitching of senior Jaylee Hinrichs, who improved to 19-4 with the complete-game win. Hinrichs allowed five hits, two runs and struck out 19 Red Raiders. 

Midland broke a scoreless game with two runs in the third on a two-run home run by Katlin Anders. The Red Raiders made it a one-run game when Jennifer Boeve hit a one-out double and scored on a single by Dreesen. 

The Warriors came back with an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth that chased Northwestern starter Sydnee Isom (3-4). Kylie Engelman delivered an RBI single in the inning. Northwestern made it a one-run game again in the sixth on a solo home run by Boeve and had the tying run at third before Hinrichs ended the threat with a strikeout. 

Midland put the game away with three runs in the sixth after a double by Madison Plummer and two-run home run by Engelman.

Isom took the loss, giving up four hits and three runs in 3.2 innings. Samantha Ubben pitched the final 2.1 innings. Boeve and Dreesen accounted for two hits each.
