O'Donnell's Late-Game Heroics Lead To Game Two Win

Mason O'Donnell came through with a two-run, two-out triple in the top of the seventh inning to deliver Northwestern past Mount Marty 8-6 in game two of a key conference doubleheader played tonight in Yankton, S.D. The Red Raiders lost game one 5-2 and are now 13-13 in the GPAC, 19-23 overall, with two games left against the Lancers in the regular season.

Knotted at six in a back-and-forth game two, O'Donnell drilled a triple with two outs, scoring both Evan Olesen and Alex Fuhs, to give the Red Raiders an 8-6 lead. O'Donnell shut down the Lancers in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the key win. The senior earned the win, improving to 4-2, giving up one unearned run in two innings of relief.

Brady Roberts pitched the first five innings for Head Coach Brian Wede's squad, yielding 10 hits and five runs, three in the first and two more in the fifth.

Trailing 3-0 early, Northwestern came back with a four-run third inning. Sutton Derr drove in O'Donnell on a groundout for the first run, followed by an RBI single by Drew Schutt and two-run home run by Colton Harold.

Schutt led off the fifth with a solo home run, giving the Red Raiders a 5-3 lead, but Mount Marty came back in the bottom half to tie it at 5-5, scoring both runs with two outs on a single by Devin Bell and double from Gabriel Leon.

Both teams scored a run in their half of the sixth inning. Britton Yoder led off with a single, advanced to second after a balk and scored after a Ben De Boer single. Mount Marty scored the tying run in the sixth on a couple of NW errors and walks.

The Red Raiders totaled 13 hits in game two, three from De Boer and two each by Schutt, Harold and O'Donnell.

Nick Iossi (5-2) lost for just the second time this season, giving up seven hits and four runs, in four innings of relief. Justin Miller and Donavon West had two hits each and Colin Muth went 1-for-2 with two runs scored.

Blake Svoboda (7-2) outdueld Olesen (2-3) in the Lancers' 5-2 game one win. The Red Raiders freshman righthander gave up eight hits and five runs, four earned, in the full six innings. Svoboda permitted six hits and two runs while striking out five in the complete-game win.

Northwestern scored both runs in the top of the first inning on a double by Harold and groundout from Austin Zylstra, scoring Derr and Schutt. Mount Marty responded with a run in the bottom of the first and grabbing the lead for good with a three-run second. Devin Bell hit a two-run double and Leon added an RBI groundout.
