Red Raiders, Doane Split Conference Doubleheader

Northwestern plated five runs in the top of the first and Luke Hughes pitched into the seventh inning as the Red Raiders downed Doane 6-5 in game two of a conference doubleheader played today in Crete, Neb. The Red Raiders were edged in game one, 7-6. 

Coach Brian Wede's squad is now 6-6 in the GPAC, 12-16 overall. 

The Red Raiders sent 10 batters to the plate in the top of the first, scoring five runs on six hits, and chased Doane starter Manny Armendariz (1-1) without recording an out. Ben De Boer and Sutton Derr hit back-to-back singles to open the game and came around to score after a Tigers' error and Drew Schutt double. Colton Harold followed with his third home run of the season, a two-run shot, to make the score 5-0. 

Hughes (1-4) made the five-run lead hold up, earning his first win of the season by giving up seven hits and four runs in six-plus innings. Mason O'Donnell recorded the final three outs to pick up his first save of the season, striking out the final batter with the tying run at third.

Northwestern totaled 10 hits, led by De Boer and Derr with two each. Both Schutt and Harold drove in two runs with Schut plating the winning run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth.

Eduardo Yanez paced the Tigers nine-hit attack by going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Lukas White added one hit and drove in two.

The Red Raiders overcame an early 6-1 deficit with a five-run fifth inning before losing game one 7-6. Ryan Reynolds (1-1) took the loss, walking three and giving up the winning run in the bottom of the fifth. Evan Olesen pitched two innings of scoreless relief, coming in with the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the fifth.

With Doane leading 6-1, Northwestern scored five runs on three hits and four consecutive walks off four different Tiger pitchers to tie the score at six. Josh Fakkema recorded the big hit, a two-run single that scored Schutt and Austin Zylstra

Northwestern totaled seven hits in the opener, two by Schutt while five Red Raiders tallied one hit each.

White led the Tigers' offense, going 3-for-3 and an RBI, while Aaron Mason went 2-for-4 with two runs.
