Rickabaugh Pitches Gem; Leads NW To Game One Victory

Alec Rickabaugh pitched a complete game, five-hitter in leading Northwestern to a 3-2 win over the University of Jamestown (N.D.) in the first game of a conference doubleheader played at Veterans Park in Topeka, Kan. The Red Raiders lost game two 8-3; are now 1-3 in the GPAC, 7-11 overall.

Rickabaugh (2-2) picked up his first complete game of the season, giving up five hits and two runs to go with five strikeouts. The junior right hander allowed an RBI single in the second and a solo home run in the sixth inning.

Down 2-1 in the top of the seventh, Drew Schutt led off with a double and was lifted for a pinch runner, Alex Fuhs. With Fuhs still on second and now two outs, pinch hitter Sutton Derr singled and scored Fuhs to knot the score at 2-2. Derr then stole second and scored off an RBI single by Britton Yoder

Head Coach Brian Wede's squad accounted for six hits, led by Yoder (2/3) and four others had one hit each (Ben De Boer, Austin Zylsta, Schutt and Derr). Northwestern opened the game's scoring with a run in the top of the third with an RBI double by De Boer that scored Yoder.

Dakota Nelson (2-1) took the loss, giving up five hits and three runs in 6.2 innings. He struck out six and walked one. Jaden Yackley led the Jimmies at the plate, going 2-for-3 and drove in both runs.

Northwestern grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game two but was outscored 8-1 over the final six innings to lose 8-3. De Boer paced the Red Raiders five-hit attack, going 2-for-4 with a run scored at the top of the order. Mason O'Donnell, Schutt and Yoder had the other hits for Wede's squad.

De Boer and O'Donnell hit back-to-back singles at the start and came around to score after wild pitch and error by the Jimmies.

Jamestown came back with a run in the second and three more in the third to take the lead for good. The Red Raiders scored their final run in the top of the fourth when Yoder scored on a passed ball.

Brady Roberts (2-2) gave up seven hits and six runs in four innings to get the loss. The freshman struck out four and walked two. A.J. Nitzschke pitched a scoreless 1.2 innings of relief.

Drake Pilat led Jamestown with three hits and Chase Hacker added two home runs and drove in five. Kensaku Akiya gave up four hits and three runs in four inning to factor into the decision. Andrew Reed was nearly flawless in the final three innings, earning the save.
