The Red Raiders (5-6, 2-2 GPAC) fell in overtime to (RV) Morningside College (9-2, 3-1 GPAC) 1-0.
Northwestern battled hard throughout the windy day as they were able to keep a high powered attack fairly silent throughout regulation. The Raiders only allowed 5 total shots, 3 on goal.
On the attack though, the Raiders could not find that final pass or a quality finish when they needed to.
Anselmo Kim lead the Raiders with 2 shots on goal.
The 0-0 scoreline would follow the match into overtime where the game opened up a bit for both the Raiders and the Mustangs although chances on target were still rare. The 0-0 scoreline would change in the 99th minute when the Raiders would get a free kick at the top of the Mustang box. The ensuing free kick would get blocked and the Mustangs would counter with numbers into the Raider half and they would earn a foul right on top of the Raider box.
Moritz Lusch would step up to the ball and hit a screamer with his left foot over the Red Raider wall and into the back of the net for the game winning goal.
"The guys played really well today," commented head coach
Dan Swier. "Our defending was fearless. We kept the ball well. And we created some good scoring chances. The only thing we were missing today was the final product. This game can be brutal, especially when the final product is the only thing missing"
The Red Raiders continue their GPAC schedule Wednesday night at 7:15pm as they host Dordt University at the NWC Soccer Complex.
