The Red Raiders (8-8, 5-4 GPAC) fell in a tight match to Midland University (12-3-2, 8-1-1 GPAC) Saturday afternoon, 2-1.
Northwestern got off to a great start and were able to dictate much of the play in the early going. They defended well and were able to generate some positive scoring chances.
The Raiders got on the board first in the 29th minute when NWC earned a corner. The ball that was played in bounced around players in the box and
James Bolger from the ground would somehow find
Jake Foscalina for the finish.
The 1-0 lead would last 11 minutes as the Warriors would get back in the game after a penalty in the box resulted in a Warrior PK. Diego Konincks would bury the goal and the score would stay the same going into halftime.
Midland would jump on the Raiders early in the second half after Mike Eijgendaal would get behind the Raider back line and would be able to find a finish around
James Warren.
NWC would battle throughout the second half but could never really put together a strong and dangerous attack to get even in the match.
"We played well today but not well enough to get the job done," commented head coach
Dan Swier. "Midland are a dangerous attacking team and despite scoring first, we were not clean enough in the back to keep them off the scoreboard."
The Raiders travel to Jamestown Wednesday night at 7:30pm.
