Null and Boles Lead Raiders at Cusatis Open

Saturday, January 5, 2019

Andrew Null and Austin Boles lead the Raiders to top four finishes at the Cusatis Open Saturday in Hastings, Neb.11751

Austin Boles entered in the 125 pound bracket and won his first round match by fall at the 1:15 mark over Tye Paluso from Central Christian College (Kan.). He would follow that up in the quarterfinal with another fall, this time at the 3:29 mark in the second period.

Boles would lose a tough match in the semi-final 6-8 Evan Shell from Northeastern Junior College (Colo.) but would round out the day with an 8-6 win over Cian Apple from Northeastern Junior College to give the Raiders their best finish of the day.

Andrew Null would take a much longer route to a top four finish on the day. His day started off with a fall at the 4:04 mark over Anthony Espinoza from Hastings College. The quarterfinal match would not go as well though as Null would lose to Johnny Blankenship from the University of Nebraska. Blankenship coming into the day was 12-3 on the year.

Null would then take on Tyler Cunningham from University of Nebraska-Kearney in the consolation rounds and would win a tight match 4-2. He would then beat Aiden Funk from the Colorado School of Mines via fall at the 2:15 mark.

Null would then turn on the gas in the consolation semi-final beating Caden Haugen of Dickinson Stat (N.D.) with a 14-5 major decision. Null would then have to have a medical forfeit in the 3rd place match to finish 4th overall in the 165 pound weight class.

"These two guys battled hard throughout the day and looked good," commented head coach Rik Dahl. "We had some other guys who wrestled well, but we need to do a better job of creating scoring opportunities as a whole. We left a lot of points on the mat and found ourselves reacting to their offense. We need change that on the weeks to come."

The Red Raiders will travel to the University of Jamestown on January 10th for their 3rd GPAC dual looking to stay undefeated in duals on the season.
