The Red Raiders drop to 1-1 on the year after losing 2-0 to Benedictine College (Kan.) Saturday. Both goals came in the second half for the Ravens as they kick off their year with a 1-0 start.
The Raiders battled hard throughout the match but did a great job in the first half holding the Ravens to only 4 shots, 2 on goal, in the first half. They stayed disciplined as a group of 11 on the field and were able to eliminate dangerous balls through their back line.Â
The second half had a different story. The Raiders became a bit more stretched defensively, allowing the Ravens to switch the ball with dangerous results. Benedictine found the back of the net in the 53rd minute off a cross from Adam Bruce. Danile Bruce beat his defender to the ball and flicked it over
Matt Scott.
The second goal came only 7 minutes lated in the 60th minute when Ruairi Cotter got in behind on a through ball and played a cross into Jack Gerker who jumped and chested the ball past his marking defender and Scott.
The Raiders earned a few chances in the second half but only found the frame on 2 of the 4 shots taken.Â
"When you go on the road against a quality opponent you need to play well for 90 minutes to get a result," commented Head Coach
Dan Swier. "All soccer matches have shifts in momentum and we failed to absorb a momentum shift early in the second half. Ultimately, that 10-minute span proved to be the difference between the two teams on the night. We played well overall and had a lot of good, useful learning opportunities that will help us improve as we continue through our season."
The Raiders were lead offensively by
Tyler Limmer who tallied 2 shots on goal and
Breno Fabbri who had two strong chances with one of them being saved.
Matt Scott registered 5 saves on the night.
Northwestern will face Bethel (Ind.) and Trinity Christian (Ill.) this weekend as they host the 10th annual Pizza Ranch Classic.Â
