Kayla Tindall pitched a complete-game four-hitter in leading Northwestern to a 2-1 win over Dakota Wesleyan in game one of a GPAC doubleheader played today at Christensen Field in Fremont, Neb. The Red Raiders lost game two 2-0 to earn a split.
Tindall limited a dangerous DWU line-up to four hits, all singles, in seven full innings. The senior, who improved to 11-4 on the season, walked three and struck out nine.
The Red Raider bats provided just enough offense for Tindall, scoring a run in each of the first two innings.
Madison Beaver led off the bottom of the first inning with a single, advanced to second on a stolen base and to third after a DWU error. She later scored on a successful squeeze bunt by Jessica Sandbutle.
Northwestern added a run in the second when
Katie Elliott came through with a two-out, RBI single that scored
Jensen Boger.
Dakota Wesleyan junior Sierra Haage (5-7) nearly matched Tindall's effort in the circle, holding Northwestern's offense to five singles while striking out eight. The Tigers scored their lone run in the third after an RBI groundout by Melysia Ortega, plating Andriana Sprakel. DWU later had the tying run at second but Tindall struck out Haage to end the inning.
Both pitchers dominated in game two as Haage outdueled
Emma Schnell for a 2-0 win.
Schnell (12-2) was brilliant despite picking up her second loss of the season and first since March 2. The freshman gave up six hits, two earned runs and struck out four in the full seven innings.
Haage, who picked up the loss in game one, earned the win and improved to 6-7 on the year. She limited the Red Raiders to three hits, walked four and struck out nine.
Beaver led the Red Raider offense with a double while both Boger and Schnell had one hit each.
Karly Severance went 2-for-3 with a run scored and Stephanie Gabel went 1-for-2 with an RBI to lead DWU. The Tigers scored both runs in the fifth inning with three straight singles by Severance, Haage and Alyssa Garcia to load the bases with no outs. Gabel and Paige Kinley followed with consecutive sacrifice flies that scored Severance and pinch runner Julia Kelley.
Northwestern is scheduled to host Doane on Saturday, April 21.
