Emma Schnell pitched seven dominant innings in leading (RV) Northwestern College to a 2-1, game two win and earn a split against 22nd-ranked Moriningside in the GPAC opener for both teams. The Red Raiders dropped game one 1-0 and are now 14-5 on the season.
Schnell (7-1) earned her seventh consecutive win after limiting the Mustangs to four hits and one unearned run in the complete game. The freshman walked two and struck out four.
Emily Bosch and
Madison Beaver paced the Red Raiders offense with two hits and a run scored. Both
Jessica Sandbulte and
Jensen Boger added an RBI double as Northwestern totaled seven hits off Morningside pitchers Alex Nelson (2-2) and Paige Lansink.
Beaver led off the bottom of the first inning with a double (her 100th career hit) and scored two batters later on an RBI double by Sandbulte. The Red Raiders scored again in the fourth on back-to-back doubles by Bosch and Boger.
Morningside scored its lone run in the top of the sixth on a two-out RBI single by Jayci Hinker, scoring pinch runner Ashton Whited.
Nelson picked up the loss for the Mustangs, giving up two hits and one run in just one inning.
Game one was a classic pitcher's dual between Northwestern senior
Kayla Tindall and Morningside junior Hallie Misiaszek. The two pitchers combined to give up just nine hits, one run and recorded 13 strikeouts against three walks. Morningside scored the lone run off a solo home run by Carson Cameron with one out in the second inning.
Tindall picked up the hard-luck loss, falling to 6-3 on the season, giving up six hits and one earned run to go with seven strikeouts. Misiaszek (8-3) allowed three hits, walked two and struck out six in earning her GPAC-leading eighth victory of the season.
Northwestern had its best scoring chance in the bottom of the seventh when they had the bases loaded with no outs. Misiaszek, however, recorded back-to-back strikeouts, followed by a groundout to third to end the rally.
