The Red Raiders fell to the Briar Cliff University Chargers Thursday afternoon 2-1 in overtime. The GPACÂ Quarterfinal matchup was tight and cagey and the Chargers were able to prevail.Â
The match favored Briar Cliff throughout as the Red Raiders sat back tactically and were attempting to defend and counter throughout the match. The Chargers held possession often but the Raiders were sound defensively, especially in the first half.Â
Although the Chargers had 10 shots in the first half, they could only muster 6 on frame and none of them put
Matt Scott under duress. The Raiders could not find the final ball through to their goal scorers in the first half and only found the frame twice in the first half.Â
The second half saw both teams start to stretch out more but the score would stay 0-0 until the 61st minute when Prichard Sibanda of Briar Cliff found a loose ball in the box and was able to get off a quick shot that go deflected and popped bac past Scott for the 1-0 BCU lead.
The Raiders looked like they would be going home in regulation but a series of free kicks saw the them get numbers into the box to cause havoc and in turn, earned a penalty kick with 17 seconds left in the game.
Anselmo Kim stepped up and calmly placed a finish past the keeper to put the Raiders even, earning at least and overtime period.
Northwestern looked like a different team in the overtime period and they came out wanting possession of the ball and put the BCU midfield and defenders under pressure.Â
Kim would earn another chance. thrre minutes into the overtime periods taking on slew of BCU defenders and getting a good left footed shot that just missed the frame of the goal.
The Raiders, after a strong battle, would end up on the wrong side of the affair as Prichard Sibanda would double his tally and get through on a long ball counter attack that saw Sibanda get 1v1 with Scott. Sibanda would calmly avoid Scott on his shot and bag the game winner.Â
The Raiders would end the year with a 10-7-2 record overall.
