The Red Raiders went 1-0-1 during the Pizza Ranch Classic at the NWC Soccer Complex over the weekend. The Raiders drew with Benedictine College (RV) on Friday night after a hard fought game that ended 1-1 and then came away with a win Saturday night after a 2-0 win against Evangel University. Northwestern is off to one of their hottest starts in program history going 3-1-1 in their first five games. The Raiders last went 3-1-1 in their first five games in 2014 when they started off 5-1-1 but ended the season at a 10-8-1 mark.
Anselmo Kim started off the weekend right for the Raiders putting in his 3rd goal of the season in the 5th minute.
Lee Wynja's through ball came after a great buildup off the left side and Wynja was ale to play Anselmo through for an easy finish 1v1 against the keeper. This was Anselmo's 3
rd goal of the season.
The lead did not hold for long as the Ravens matched the tally in the 14
th minute as Adam James put in a goal off an assist from Daniel Barry after the Red Raiders got caught after trying to counter attack and got countered themselves.
The second half was very different than the first after teams made adjustments at the break. Those adjustments lead to more of the ball in the Red Raider defensive half yet NWC still was able to create off the counter attack.
The score would stay the same throughout the match though and ended in a 1-1 draw after two additional overtime halves.
Saturday night started off again with the Raiders scoring first. This time, the goal came in the 21
st minute from
Alex Schussman. The Raiders transitioned down the left side of the field with
Tyler Limmer taking on two Evangel players and getting Schussman the ball in the box for a one touch finish.
The score would remain the same until Northwestern sealed the deal in the 85
