Red Raiders Knock of Bellevue (RV) in OT

The Red Raiders knocked off Bellevue University (RV) on the road yesterday in the first overtime 1-0. This is the first time since 2011 that the Raiders have earned two wins out of their first three games.

The game was tight throughout the full match seeing both teams have opportunities to score. The Bruins had 29 shots but only 12 were on frame, all of which were saved by Naomi Schimmel. This match was Naomi's 12th shutout of her career. Her best save came in the 80th minute off a deflected shot from 20 yards out. The ball ricocheted off another Bellevue player and forced Naomi to make a save the opposite of the way her body was moving. It kept the Bruins off the board and after that, they did not register many chances.

Northwestern held strong defensively in front of Naomi as well, blocking many shots and crosses from the Bruins. This is the Raider's second straight shutout.

The game winner came in the 97th minute off the foot of Sarah Homan. Sarah took on two defenders and hit a left footed shot from 18 yards out. The shot hit hard off the crossbar and bounced right of the goalkeeper trying to make the save and into the back of the net. This is the second straight year the Raiders have knocked off a team receiving votes in the national poll. They beat Midland University last season 2-0.

"It is always great to beat a top end team," said Head Coach Ben Karnish. "We are a team that has the talent to go and beat teams like this and we were able to put all the pieces together yesterday to do so. We played great in our defensive third and Naomi had a great game in goal. They kept us in the game and we were able to be the better team in the overtime period."

The Raiders will face off Friday in the first match of the Pizza Ranch Classic against Central Christian at 7:15pm at the NWC Soccer Complex. This will be the Raider's home opener.
