Tanner Ortlund pitched seven strong innings in leading Northwestern to a 10-6 game two win and earn a split against Dakota Wesleyan in a GPAC doubleheader played today in Mitchell, S.D. Northwestern lost game one 8-4 and moves to 5-9 in the GPAC, 14-19 overall.
Ortlund allowed six hits and two runs in seven full innings, his longest outing of the year. The junior walked three, struck out two and improved his record to 3-2. Chase Davis pitched a scoreless eighth inning and faced four batters in the ninth before being replaced by Joe Done, who ended the DWU rally in the ninth.
Northwestern totaled 15 hits, led by A.J. Nitzschke who went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Casey Guthmiller added three hits, all singles, and had and RBI while both Reed Smith and Matt Martin added two hits each. Dustin Gaither hit his third home run of the double header, a solo shot in the top of the first inning.
Down 2-1 after the third, Northwestern grabbed the lead for good with a six-run fifth inning. Both Guthmiller and Mitchell Kresnik had an RBI singles and Nitzschke cleared the bases with a three-run double. The Red Raiders added insurance runs in both the sixth and seventh innings.
Dillon Stadlman suffered the loss for DWU, giving up eight hits and seven runs in 4.1 innings. Jared Nielan, Zach Uttecht and Sean Riley all had two hits and an RBI to pace the Tigers' offense.
Gaither homered twice in the Red Raiders 8-4 loss in game one. The junior led off the sixth inning with a solo shot and followed with another solo home run in the seventh, both off DWU reliever Braiden Jorgensen. Gaither had three of his team's six hits, adding a single in the third. Reed Smith had two hits, including an RBI triple.
Raphael DeHoyos (2-4) gave up eight hits and four earned runs in five innings in the loss.
Steven Somerville earned the win, giving up five hits and three runs in five-plus innings. Peyton Price went 2-3 with three RBIs and Uttecht added two hits and two runs scored.
