Red Raiders Drop Pair To Morningside

Northwestern College lost a pair of games to Morningside (10-3, 18-5) on Senior Day this afternoon in Orange City, Iowa. The Red Raiders close the season with an 8-20 conference record, 17-30 overall.

Raphael DeHoyos (2-7) took the loss in game one, giving up eight hits, seven earned runs in 5.1 innings. The junior walked three and struck out six. Victor Mena and Patrick Wagner pitched the final 1.2 innings in relief. 

Down 2-0, Christian Stekl hit a solo home run with one out in the third to get the Red Raiders within a run. Morningside came back with four runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to put the game away. A.J. Nitzschke capped the Red Raiders scoring with a two-run home run in the fifth.

Reed Smith led the Red Raiders at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. 

Blake Meacham, Jacob Lamoreux and Blake Rogers all hit home runs for Morningside and Lucas Henning (7-3) picked up the complete-game win, striking out six. 

Morningside scored eight runs in the third and five more in the fourth innings to get past Norhtwestern in game two. 

The Red Raiders totaled nine hits in game two, led by Dustin Gaither (3-for-4) and both Matt Martin and Austin Zylstra with two hits each. Martin scored a run and drove in two while Zylstra hit his fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fifth.

Tanner Ortlund (3-5) took the loss, giving up three hits and six runs in two-plus innings. 

Spencer Wyant (2-2) earned the win, pitching the first five innings for the Mustangs. Cameron Wagner gave up one hit in two scoreless innings of relief.

Dylan Mersola went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs to pace the Mustangs at the plate. Lamoreux, Rogers, Nolan Hoff, Cole Chapin and Meacham all had a pair of hits.
