Isaac Horigan and Alec Rickabaugh pitched the Red Raiders to a doubleheader sweep against Mount Marty tonight in Yankton, S.D. The Red Raiders earned a 4-1 win in game one and came up with a 4-3 win in game two.
Northwestern improves to 7-15 in conference play, 16-25 overall, and will play the Lancers again tomorrow (Saturday) in a pair of GPAC games.
Horigan pitched a gem, a complete-game, two-hitter in leading Northwestern to its game one win. The senior walked one and struck out seven in giving up just one unearned run in the fourth inning. Horigan improved to 6-3 on the year.
Joe Done led the Red Raiders at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Reed Smith went 1-for-4 with an RBI and run scored at the top of the order and Michael Callahan went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
Northwestern went up 2-0 after the top of the first inning on a Done two-run single. The Red Raiders added an unearned run in the third on an RBI groundout by Casey Guthmiller, scoring Callahan who reached base following a walk.
After the Lancers scored a run in the fourth, Northwestern added an important insurance run on a Smith RBI single in the sixth.
Alex Mogensen (1-7) pitched well in the loss, giving up seven hits and one earned run in 6.1 innings. Mason Kaitfors and Ethan Lynn each had one hit, both singles.
In game two, it was Rickabaugh's turn to pitch a gem as the freshman allowed seven hits and two runs in 7.1 innings. He walked one and struck out four in improving to 4-1 on the year. Zach Rosson picked up a pair of strikeouts with the tying run on base in the eighth and Raphael DeHoyos recorded the final two outs in the ninth to record his first save.
Down 2-1, Northwestern scored a run in each of the sixth and seventh innings to take the lead. Colton Harold hit a one-out single and came around to score after an RBI double by Smith to tie the game at two in the sixth. Northwestern went ahead for good in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Dustin Gaither, scoring Matt Martin.
A two-out rally in the ninth led to the Red Raiders final run as Done singled and his courtesy runner, Mark Primrose, scored on a double by Austin Zylstra.
Done and Smith both went 2-for-4 to lead NW at the plate.
Deric Denning (1-1) took the loss for Mount Marty, giving up two runs on four hits in three innings of relief. Kaitfors totaled three hits and Caden Skinner went 2-for-4 with a home run.
