Red Raiders Pick Up Sweep In Conference Play

Northwestern College came away with a sweep of Concordia in an early season conference showdown between teams picked to finish near the top in the preseason coaches' poll. Head coach Brian Wede's club came away with a 4-1 win in game one and a 12-5 victory in game two.

The Red Raiders improve to 3-1 in the GPAC, 12-11 overall. Concordia, making its conference debut, slips to 0-2 in league play, 11-11 overall.

Both Raphael DeHoyos and Tanner Ortlund were solid on the mound and Northwestern totaled 18 hits, including three home runs in the two games.

DeHoyos (2-2) gave up four hits and one run while striking out seven in the Red Raiders game one win. The junior righthander allowed a first inning run off an RBI double by Kaleb Geiger but kept the Bulldogs scoreless from there. Austin Zylstra pitched a perfect seventh inning to earn his third save.

Northwestern grabbed the lead for good with two unearned runs in the fourth inning, taking advantage of a Concordia error. Zylstra had an RBI sacrifice fly to drive in the second run. A solo home run by A.J. Nitzschke put the Red Raiders up 3-1 in the fifth and a Matt Martin sacrifce fly drove in the final run in the top of the seventh.

Casey Guthmiller and Zach Rosson both had two hits for the Red Raiders while Joe Done and Zylstra recorded one hit each.

Northwestern hit a pair of home runs and totaled 12 hits in its game two win. Done got things started with a two-out single followed by a home run by Martin, giving Northwestern a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.

Concordia answered with a run in the bottom of the first but Northwestern scored five runs in the third and put the game away with four more in the fourth. Michael Callahan, Christian Stekl and Guthmiller hit RBI singles in the third while the other two runs were scored on a hit-by-pitch and a wild pitch.

Zylstra hit a three-run home run and Nitzschke recorded a triple and scored off a Concordia error in the Red Raiders four-run fourth. Done capped his team's scoring with an RBI single in the seventh, scoring Reed Smith.

Ortlund (2-2) picked up the win, giving up six hits and four runs in five innings. He struck out eight and walked three. Rosson pitched the final two innings, giving up two hits and one run.

Northwestern will play Dordt for its home opener on Tuesday, March 28 at 5/7:30pm.
