Red Raiders Open GPAC Play With Split Against Briar Cliff

Christian Stekl belted a sixth-inning grand slam and Isaac Horigan pitched six strong innings in leading Northwestern to a 9-6 win in game one of a GPAC doubleheader played today against Briar Cliff. Northwestern dropped game two 9-5 and move to 10-11 on the season. 

Horigan improved his record to a team-best 5-1, giving up seven hits and four earned runs through six innings. He did not give up a hit until the fourth inning and struck out two. Alec Rickabaugh pitched a scoreless seventh to earn his first save.

Holding on to a 5-3 lead in the sixth, Northwestern loaded the bases on a Michael Callahan single, a Chargers' error and a walk. After a long fly-out by Dustin Gaither, Stekl drove a 3-1 pitch by Zayne Mowen over the left-field wall to give Northwestern a 9-3 lead. 

Briar Cliff came back with three runs in the home half of the sixth, all with two outs. 

A.J. Nitzschke was one of three NW players with two hits, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. He also walked twice and reached base four. Callahan went 2-for-5 with an RBI and Casey Guthmiller also had two hits.

Northwestern opened up a 3-0 lead after the first inning as four consecutive Red Raiders reached base to start the game. 

Peyton Griesert and Brady Harpenau had two hits each to lead the Chargers. Tyler Delperdang took the loss on the mound, giving up seven hits and four runs through four innings.

Gaither went 3-for-4 with two runs scored but the Red Raiders lost the second-game of the twin bill 9-5. Northwestern outhit Briar Cliff 11-9, led by Gaither and also Nitzschke and Joe Done, who both had two hits each. Austin Zylstra had a three-run double in the ninth inning. Northwestern scored all five of its runs in the last two innings.

Colin Pennings (1-3) pitched well despite picking up the loss, limiting Briar Cliff to six hits and three runs in six innings. He struck out three and walked two. 

Briar Cliff totaled nine hits, led by Harpenau and Ryan Welsh with two hits each. Andrew Stover earned the win, pitching seven shutout innings and striking out six.

Northwestern will head to Seward, Neb. to play Concordia on Monday, March 27.
