Wede Earns 300th Win as Red Raiders Open Season With Split

Colin Pennings pitched seven strong innings and Michael Callahan drove in a career-best six runs in leading Northwestern College to a 10-7 game two win over LSU-Alexandria this afternoon in Joplin, Mo. Northwestern lost the opener 6-3. 

The game two win was the 300th career victory for head coach Brian Wede, now in his 11th season in charge of the Red Raider baseball program. Wede is the winningest coach in program history and owns a 300-209 overall record (59%). 

Scoreless heading into the bottom of the fifth, Northwestern erupted for seven runs on five hits and a pair of walks off LSU Alexandria starter Josh Gray. David Rowley led off with a single and advanced to third on a double by Austin ZylstraChristian Stekl followed with a two-run double and then scored the Red Raiders' third run after an RBI single by Casey Guthmiller. Following a pitching change, Northwestern loaded the bases with back-to-back walks to A.J. Nitzschke and Matt Martin and all came around to score on a grand slam by Callahan to make the score 7-0. 

The Red Raiders added three more runs in the seventh on a two-run home run by Callahan and an RBI single by Rowley, scoring Dustin Gaither to make the score 10-1. LSU-Alexandria scored three in both the eighth and ninth innings.

Pennings was masterful in his seven innings, giving up three hits and recording 11 strikeouts. 

Callahan paced the Red Raiders' 14-hit attack, going 3-for-4 with six RBIs. Guthmiller, Martin, Rowley and Stekl all had two hits each.

Northwestern totaled seven hits in its 6-3 game one loss to LSU-Alexandria. Zylstra went 2-for-2 with a solo home run and Nitzschke also hit a solo shot and had two hits. 

Raphael DeHoyos picked up the loss, giving up eight hits and five runs in six innings. He struck out five and walked one. 

Northwestern will play LSU-Alexandria in another doubleheader on Saturday.
