Raiders Get Knocked Out of Postseason

The Red Raiders went to Seward, Nebraska and came out empty handed in their GPAC Tournament Semi-Final match against Concordia University. The 2-1 was the first victory for the Bulldogs over the Raiders since 2008. The 5th seeded Raiders beat 4th seeded Dordt in the Quarterfinals and top seeded Concordia beat 8th seeded Morningside to earn the spot in the Semi-Finals.

The first half started with a good amount of back and forth for both teams but Concordia held the shot advantage but more importantly, the corner kick advantage. Concordia was earning corner after corner and eventually found themselves with their 10th corner in the first half.

Concordia had looked dangerous on their corners up until that point and were finally able to put away a corner in the 45th minute. The cross from Jeannelle Condame found Maria Deeter, Concordia's leading scorer, who rose above the NWC markers and slammed the ball in off of Sabrina Tarchione who tried valiantly to keep the back from getting into the NWC net.

The Raiders responded immediately after the kickoff with less than one minute left on the clock after they earned a free kick from about 40 yards out. As the ball got hit high in to the Bulldog box, Tatiana Garcia got pulled down right inside the 18 yard box and a penalty kick was called. The ref had been warning players on almost every set piece to stop holding players and blew the whistle after those warnings did not work.

Sarah Beaton stepped up to take the spot kick for the Raiders and was able to roof Carley Lindsey, even though she guessed the proper direction, for her second goal of the season. The 1-1 score would hold for the next 25 seconds and the second half was tight and contentious.

The second half was a lot of action throughout the field as both keepers saw more shots than they did in the first half and both teams had their chances to score. There were many fouls in the second half and the Raiders fouled the Bulldogs about 35 yards away from goal in the 54th minute. Condame again was on the ball for the Bulldogs and sent in a long cross that found Victoria Cera 7 yards from goal with a wide open header to the far post past Naomi Schimmel. The were a lot of blue shirts in the box for the Bulldogs and they capitalized off yet another set piece.

The Raiders looked to respond and had a great chance with Jessi Carver in the 73rd minute as she capitalized on a bad pass back from a Concordia defender to their keeper and Carver almost put away the winner, just pushing the ball past the far post, grazing it on its way out of bounds.

"It is always hard to have your season end abruptly," commented Head Coach Ben Karnish. "We played the top seed very well and there is nothing to hang our heads about. They took advantage of the set pieces we gave them and that is what good teams will do; punish you for them. I cannot be more proud of the team this year in all that they did on and off the field. It has been a fun season and without a doubt, a memorable one for me as a coach with such a great group of gals. Our seniors gave it their all and it will be hard to see them all go."

Madison Bertman, Sarah Beaton, Naomi Schimmel, Alex Garcia, and Tamra Wielenga all played their last game for the Raiders Tuesday night. They will graduate as the most winning class in Red Raider Women's Soccer history going 42-29-7 overall.
