The Raiders knocked off previously undefeated Concordia University in double overtime Saturday at Open Space Park in Sioux Center, IA. The NWC Soccer Complex was water logged from 7 inches of rain that hit Orange City over the past week.Â
The scoring started off early again for the Red Raiders as
Alex Schussman was pressuring the Bulldog back line and put his face in front of a clearance from the Concordia center back and
Tyler Limmer anticipated the chance and was able to win the ball behind the back line. Limmer then took touches to goal and cut back to set up an easy near post finish. The 3rd minute goal is nothing new for the Raiders as they have been able to capitalize early and often in many of their games.
The Bulldogs kept battling though and were finally able to break through in the second half after bombarding the Raiders with attack after attack. The 75th minute goal by Micah Lehenbauer came off a cross and a half clearance by the Raiders and Lehenbauer jumped and half volleyed the ball into the bottom corner past
Matt Scott.
The Raiders were undeterred by the tying goal and were able to hold strong the rest of the second half and the first overtime.
Ben Hengst made a game saving tackle in the beginning of the second overtime and it was a sliding tackle that had the crowd on their feet. Then came the 107th minute.
Tyler Limmer pounced on a loose ball behind the Concordia midfield and though his first touch went into the center back's chest, his ability to anticipate allowed him to take a touch off the defender's body and he broke through the back line. Concordia scrambled to recover and a tackle almost took the ball away but Limmer was calm in front of the frame and buried his brace and game winner for the Raiders. The goal was Limmer's 10th of the season.
"It was great to get a win against a good team after a grind of a game," commented Head Coach
Dan Swier. " We have been so close in many games like this one and we were able to finish things off right this time. It is our first overtime win since 2014 and first time this year we earned a win after letting in a goal. It was a fun win for us all."
The Raiders look to continue their hot GPAC start Tuesday at Dordt College at 3pm.Â
