Northwestern battled to an important 2-1 GPAC Conference win over Morningside College Wednesday. The Raiders, 10-3-3 overall and 5-1-2 in the GPAC, had many threats throughout the game and were able to play well in the second half to finish out the game.
The scoring started early in the first half when the Red Raiders earned a corner kick in the 13th minute.
Kadence Feininger went over to take the corner and played a great ball that forced the Morningside keeper to make a decision to come out or stay home. She decided to come out and mistimed her jump and saw the ball sail over her head to
Nikky Farnsworth who calmly headed the ball home. It was Farnsworth's 6th of the year.Â
The Raider lead did not last long as Morningside was able to get even at the 17th minute mark. A long ball got played into the Raider box and Madison Wilde was able to calmly take down the long ball and find Jayci Miller running off of her for an easy pass and a back post, well placed finish.Â
The first half would end 1-1 but the Raiders were putting together chances but were not able to finish and earn back the lead. The second half started off with energy and enthusiasm and the work paid off for the Raiders.
Madison Bertman was able to receive a ball around midfield and started on a dribbling adventure. Bertman took on 4 different Mustang defenders and was able to get to the goal line and after beating one last defender, found Farnsworth for her second goal of the game. Farnsworth's brace propelled her to the top of the scoring list for the Raiders having now 7 goals on the season.Â
The Raiders were able to hold on and defend well the rest of the game seeing
Naomi Schimmel make 8 saves on the day with 6 of those coming in the second half.Â
The Raiders, now sitting 3rd in the GPAC, will face #20 Hastings College Saturday at 5pm and look to continue their winning streak.Â
