Already with a pair of 300-yard games this season, Kodama completed 26-of-35 passes for a career-high 408 yards and four scores. It was the fourth most passing yards in a single game by a Red Raider quarterback and most since Adam Tyrell threw for 411 in 1992.
Not to be outdone, senior wide receiver T.J. Spykstra totaled eight catches for a school-record 239 yards and one touchdown. Spykstra eclipsed the old mark (208) by Tyler Reichle against Midland set in 2005. Jacob Kalogonis led the ground game with 20 carries for a career-best 192 yards and one score while also catching five passes for 66 yards and another score. It was the first 100-yard rusher for NWC this season and was the most rushing yards by a Red Raider since Brandon Smith totaled 247 yards in a win over Briar Cliff in 2012.
Hastings scored on its opening possession as they marched 78 yards on nine plays ending in a 20-yard field goal by Nick Giaffoglione. Northwestern answered right back with a three-play, 90-yard drive finished off by a Paul Hutson one-yard touchdown run for a 7-3 lead. Kodama connected with Spykstra on a perfect 78-yard pass that helped set up the score.
Later, following a Hastings punt, Hutson reached the endzone a second time on a two-yard run giving Northwestern a 13-3 lead with eight minutes left in the first half. The Raider D forced another Broncos punt and Northwestern's offense converted again, driving 57 yards on seven plays, capped by a 20-yard touchdown pass from Kodama to Levi TeBrink. Hastings scored on the ensuing kickoff when Tahf Willingham scampered 97 yards to make the score 20-10 at the half.
Hastings made it a one score game with an early touchdown in the third quarter when Cruz Samaniego hooked up with Jordan Johnson for an 82-yard touchdown pass to make the score 20-16. Northwestern responded with a big play of its own as Kodama found Spykstra for a 65-yard touchdown pass to put the hosts in front 27-16. After the Raider D forced Hastings into a three-and-out, Kodama and the offense went on a six-play, 74 yard drive capped by a 13-yard touchdown pass to Kalogonis with 2:54 left in the third quarter.
Leading 34-13, Northwestern scored again on its first possession of the fourth quarter when Kalogonis went the distance on an 80-yard run to give his team a 41-16 advantage. The Red Raiders capped the scoring with a Kodama 10-yard touchdown pass to Jared Nelson with six minutes left to go.
Northwestern totaled 21 first downs and 627 yards of offense, the sixth highest total in program history and most since 2012 (vs Briar Cliff). Both Reggie Carter and TeBrink caught four passes for 38 and 35 yards, respectively, and Huston scored a pair of rushing touchdowns among his four carries.
The Raider D was outstanding as well, registering six sacks and four quarterback hurries. Donovan Weldon and Blake Eichmann shared game-high honors with five tackles and Kyle Van Ginkel added four stops and a sack. Nick Acoba accounted for two sacks and Sam Van Ginkel, Tanner Machacek and Josh Treybal all added one sack.
Hastings totaled 307 yards on offense and 12 first downs, led by Samaniego with 182 yards passing and touchdown to go with 26 rushing yards.
Northwestern has its bye week on Oct. 8 and will next play at Dordt on Oct. 15.
