Northwestern and Doane tied 19-19 after all the matches were complete, but fell 20-19 after the third tie breaker decided awarded Doane one point since they had scored 52 total match points against Northwestern's 51 match points.
The Red Raiders got off to a good start at 125 lbs. when Austin Boles picked up a major decision over Jonathan Fletcher 15-3. Taylon Linemann of Doane helped the Tigers pull within a point, at 4-3, after knocking off Daniel Acreo by decision 9-4.
At 141 lbs. Michael Frehse scored 14 points to defeat Adam Blank by decision 14-11 to give NWC a 7-3 lead. Martin Phillips was able to pin Elijah Dahl at 149 lbs. to put Doane ahead for the first time, 9-7.
BJ Groskreutz lost a heart-breaker to John Hedge by decision, 8-6, and NWC found themselves down 12-7 heading into the 165 lb. weight class.
Brandon Shuler was able to squeak out a 3-1 victory over Lance Lucas to pull Northwestern within two, down 12-10.
At 174 lbs. Jason Swets suffered a major decision to Kevin Corbett by the score of 14-5. Following the match, Doane was ahead 16-10 and looked to have a clear path to the victory with three matches remaining.
Tyler Schaefer put Northwestern back into the match with a first period (2:42) pin. Schaefer's pin of Austin Borne tied the match at 16-16.
Randy Null barely held on for a 3-2 win by decision at 197 lbs. over Kyle Hoffman to give NWC a 19-16 lead.
At heavyweight, Forrest Marx was unable to put anything together offensively and fell by decision (4-1) to Narscio Juarez.
After the heavyweight match both teams were tied at 19. The first tiebreaker (matches won) couldn't decide a winner since both teams won five matches each. The second tiebreaker (pins) couldn't decide a winner since both teams had one pin each. The third tiebreaker (match points in all decisions, major decisions, and technical falls) was able to break the tie and give Doane a victory as they held a 52-51 advantage in the third tiebreaker.
The Red Raiders return to the mat after Thanksgiving break on Dec. 4th when they face both Dakota Wesleyan and Augustana in Mitchell, S.D.
