Northwestern College earned a hard-fought victory against conference foe Doane University, 21-18, in a dual held tonight at the Bultman Center.
Randy Null pinned James Jones at the 6:14 mark in the final match (285) to give Northwestern a 27-23 upset win over No.9 Midland at the NAIA Duals held in Fort Wayne, Ind.
Northwestern will wrestle in the Augie Duals on Saturday, facing three NCAA D2 schools. NWC will face Southwest Minnesota St., Augustana, and Truman St. in the event on the campus of Augustana in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Northwestern dominated DWU in a GPAC dual on Wednesday night. The Raiders received some help from the Tigers, who had five open weights. NWC picked up victories at every contested weight.
Northwestern will send eight wrestlers to Buena Vista on Saturday for the BVU Open. NWC is currently receiving votes in the NAIA national poll and are second in the North Qualifying group.
Northwestern opens the 2016-17 GPAC dual season on Tuesday night at Briar Cliff. Northwestern is coming off of a 8-4 season last year and a 5-2 GPAC dual season.
Elijah Dahl placed third at the UNK Open, going 7-1 on Saturday to reach the podium for the first time this season. Dante Preciado finished sixth after a 7-2 day.
Andras Lukacs-Farkas won the DWU Open on Saturday in the 174 weight class. Austin Boles (125) and Dante Preciado (141) each finished second while Randall Null (285) finished third.
Northwestern wrestling opens the season Saturday at the DWU Open in Mitchell, S.D. NWC will take 17 wrestlers to compete in the opening meet of the season. Last season, Zach Fishman won the 174 lb. weight class.
Sr. Zach Fishman and Soph. Brandon Shuler were named NWCA Academic All-Americans on Monday. Wrestlers must have at least a 3.25 grade-point average and be a 2016 NAIA national championship qualifier or have a 3.0 GPA and earned All-American honors at the 2016 championships in Topeka.
Six Raiders Earned All-GPAC Honors for their efforts this season including seniors Zach Fishman and Tyree Cox, who were named to the All-GPAC first team.
Four Raiders earned All-GPAC honors for wrestling this season. Brandon Shuler (165 lbs) led the way earning 2nd Team accolades while Tyler Schaefer (184 lbs.), Tyree Cox (174 lbs.) and Randall Null (184 lbs.) earned honorable mention honors.
The Red Raider wrestling team wrapped up the first semester on the upswing after defeating Dakota Wesleyan, doing well at the BVU Open, and battling tough against #6 Concordia, losing a hard fought 23-13 dual.
The Northwestern wrestling team made big strides in 2013-14; doubling their dual win total (3-12 in 2012-13, 6-6 in 2013-14) and sending six wrestlers to the NAIA National Championships, four more than 2012-13.
