Red Raiders Outlast Dakota Wesleyan in Double Overtime

Northwestern closed on a 10-5 run to earn a 93-88 double-overtime win over Dakota Wesleyan Wednesday night in the Corn Palace. The Red Raiders earned their third straight win and improved to 4-4 in the GPAC, 10-6 overall.

Karen Ettleman scored a game-high 29 points and Paige O'Neal added a career-best 23 points to lead the Red Raiders scoring effort.

A steal and lay-up by Ettleman capped a 7-0 run and gave Northwestern its largest lead, 56-41, with 13 minutes left to play. Still a 10-point game at the 9:35 mark, Dakota Wesleyan outscored NWC 16-7 over a five minute stretch to cut the lead down to one, 70-69, with five minutes left.

Northwestern built the lead back up to four (74-70) after free throws by O'Neal and Ettleman but DWU then scored the next seven points, taking a 77-74 lead upon a pair of free throws by Erica Herrold with 23 seconds left.

Arianne Gesell converted a lay-up to make a one point game and, following a DWU timeout, the Red Raiders fouled Gabby Frybko, who put down both free throws to make it a three-point game once again (79-76) with 15 seconds left. The Red Raiders came down, however, and worked the ball to Morgan VanDerSloot, who knocked down a three-pointer with four seconds left to send the game into overtime tied at 79.

Points were at a premium in the first overtime as both teams scored just one field goal. Northwestern went ahead on a lay-up by Gesell halfway through the extra period and DWU tied it at the 1:22 mark after a lay-up by Kristin Sabers. Both teams missed on chances to win it over the final minute and the game went into a second overtime tied at 81.

Still knotted at 83, Northwestern went ahead for good, scoring the next six points on consecutive baskets by O'Neal and a lay-up by Ettleman. A three-pointer by Sabers cut the lead in half (89-86) but a lay-up by Gesell and free throws by Ettleman sealed the tough road win for NWC.

Northwestern shot 54% for the game but just 25% from beyond the arc (2-for-8). Gesell (11) and Renee Maneman (10) were also in double figures. The Red Raiders held a slim 36-35 edge on the boards, led by Gesell  and Ettleman with eight. Ettleman dished out six assists and Northwestern committed just 14 turnovers.

Dakota Wesleyan shot 39% for the game and had six players score in double figures, led by Sabers with 19 points. Herrold added 17 and Frybko chipped in 15.

Both teams held the lead early until the Red Raiders took command with a 9-0 run, capped by a three-point play by O'Neal, to put NWC up 23-15 at the eight minute mark. Northwestern led by eight (39-31) at the break and pushed the lead to as much as 15 (56-41) in the second half.

Northwestern will head to Seward, Neb. to play No. 3 Concordia on Saturday, Jan. 10.
