Red Raiders Get Past DWU

Samantha Kleinsasser scored a game-high 24 points in leading second ranked Northwestern to an 85-76 win over Dakota Wesleyan Wednesday night in the Bultman Center. The Red Raiders improve to 8-0 in the GPAC, 16-0 overall, while DWU falls to 4-4 in conference play, 11-6 overall.

Kleinsasser made all 10 free throw attempts and went 7-for-10 from the field en route to her five 20+-point game of the season. The senior just missed her eighth double-double of the year, pulling down nine rebounds. Mackenzie Small added 21 points while Alli Engebretson (12) and Karen Hutson (11) were also in double figures.

Northwestern fell behind by as much as nine and trailed the entire first half. Down seven (36-29), Northwestern outscored DWU 7-3 over the final three minutes to close to within three (39-36) at the break.

A jumper by Karen Hutson made it a one-point game after the Red Raiders first possession of the second half but a brief 5-0 run by DWU pushed the gap back to six (44-38). Northwestern answered with an 8-0 run, capped by a pair of free throws by Kleinsasser, to give the hosts its first lead of the game, 46-44.

The teams traded baskets over the next six minutes until, after DWU tied the game at 55 following a Celeste Beck three-pointer, Northwestern scored the next eight points to take the lead for good, 63-55. Leading 73-70, the Red Raiders defense took over, allowing just one field goal over the final 4-plus minutes as they pulled away for the nine-point win.

Northwestern shot 39% for the game and 23% (5-for-22) from beyond the arc. After being outrebounded in the first half, the Red Raiders turned things in their favor in the second half, owning a 42-39 advantage for the game.

Dakota Wesleyan shot 38% for the game and 27% (7-for-26) from the three-point arc. Beck led DWU with 17 points and both Erica Herrold (15) and Amanda Hart (14) were also in double figures.

Northwestern will host #7 Concordia in the NAIA D-II women's game of the week on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 2pm.
