De Jong Leads Northwestern Past Mount Marty

Kendra De Jong scored 24 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in leading 11th-ranked Northwestern to an 80-54 win over (RV) Mount Marty Wednesday night in the Bultman Center. It was the the third straight win for NWC, who improves to 12-5 in the GPAC, 18-6 overall. 

Northwestern ran out to a 10-2 lead and never trailed in Wednesday night's win. With the Red Raiders up 20-12, Mount Marty scored six straight points to get within four (22-18) at the eight minute mark but Northwestern answered right back with an 8-1 run to push the lead to double digits (30-19). They held a 36-28 advantage at the break, shooting 50% while limiting Mount Marty to just 24% in the first half. 

The Red Raiders outscored Mount Marty 8-2 to push the lead to 12 in the opening minutes of the second half. Still up 12, Northwestern went on an 8-0, sparked by three straight baskets by Alli Dunkelberger, to extend its lead to 20 (66-46) at the six minute mark. 

Northwestern shot 55% for the game, 60% in the second half (18-for-30). De Jong led the way with her seventh double-double of the season and 37th of her career. The  senior went 11-for-16 from the field and also dished out six assists. Dunkelberger scored 19 points and dished out four assists while Karen Hutson added 12 points and eight rebounds. Northwestern outrebounded the Lancers 47-33. 

Mount Marty was held in check by the Red Raider defense, shooting just 25% from the field. April Winne scored 14 points, going just 3-for-20 from the field, and Taylor Forsch netted 13. 

Northwestern heads to Crete, Neb. to play Doane on Saturday, Feb. 9.
