10th-ranked Northwestern College rallied from a 10-point, halftime deficit to defeat 24th-ranked Dakota Wesleyan 69-66 Wednesday night in GPAC women's basketball played in the Bultman Center. Northwestern improved to 7-3 in conference play, 13-4 overall.

Trailing 38-28 at the half, Karen Hutson sparked a 12-3 Northwestern run to get the Red Raiders within one, 41-40. Hutson scored eight points during the rally and Northwestern limited DWU to just one field goal for over seven minutes at the start of the half. A Kim Johnson lay-up put DWU back up three but Mallory Cunard knocked down a three-pointer, Northwestern's only one of the game, to tie the game at 45.

The game was tied five more times (47, 51, 53, 55, 57) over the next six minutes but back-to-back field goals by Hutson and Kendra De Jong put Northwestern on top, 61-57, with four minutes left. A DWU basket by Johnson made it a two-point game again but Northwestern ran off five straight points, capped by two free throws by De Jong, to put the Red Raiders up seven with 51 seconds left. Dakota Wesleyan made one last rally and after a Celeste Beck three-pointer, was back to within two (66-64) but Northwestern iced the game with free throws by both Hutson and De Jong in the final seconds.

Northwestern shot 49% for the game and was led by De Jong with 20 points and 13 rebounds, her fourth double-double of the season. Hutson scored 17 points, 15 coming in the second half and Samantha Kleinsasser totalled 14 points and seven rebounds. Northwestern held a big advantage on the glass, 35-23, including nine offensive boards. Paige O'Neal dished out a team-high five assists and both Hutson and Alli Dunkelberger had four.

Dakota Wesleyan shot 42% for the game and was led by Celeste Beck with 18 points. Elizabeth Lamb scored 15 points, including three first half three-pointers, and Amanda Hart scored all 12 of her points on four, first-half, three-pointers. DWU shot 50% from the three-point line in the first half (8-of-16) but the Red Raider defense held them to 22% in the second half (2/9).

Northwestern ran off to a 7-3 lead to start the game but a 9-2 DWU run, sparked by three-pointers by Lamb and Hart, put the Tigers up 12-9. DWU extended its lead to six before Northwestern scored five straight to get wihin one but the Tigers closed the half on a 19-10 run to grab a 38-28 halftime lead.

Northwestern heads on the road for two straight games, beginning on Saturday, Jan. 12, against Nebraska Wesleyan, at 2:00pm.
