Northwestern used a big first half to defeat Mount Marty 67-60 in GPAC women's basketball action Wednesday night in the Bultman Center. The Red Raiders won their third straight game and improved to 20-3 overall, 11-2 in the GPAC. The Lancers fell to 15-8 overall, 6-7 in the GPAC.

The Raiders trailed by two (19-17) but outscored Mount Marty 15-2 to open up an 11-point first half lead. Northwestern led by as much as 14 with four minutes to go before a late run by the Lancers put the score at 44-33 at intermission.

The visiting Lancers scored the first four points of the second half and pulled to within five (52-47) at the 11 minute mark. The teams exchanged baskets and after a three-point play by MMC guard Jenny Miller, the Lancers were within four, 59-55. The Raiders defense took over from there and held the Lancers scoreless for nearly four minutes and both Becca Hurley and Kami Kuhlmann converted a pair of 1-and-1's to to back up eight in the final minute to preserve the win.

After shooting 56% in the first half, Northwestern cooled off considerably in the second, shooting 21% and 40% for the game. Randa Hulstein led four Raiders in double figures with 17 points, followed by Kuhlmann with 16. Hurley added 12 while Kendra DeJong put in 10. Hurley pulled down a team-high nine rebounds and dished out five assists. Defensively, Northwestern held MMC to just 36% from the field.

Northwestern heads to Dana to take on the Vikings on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 2:00pm.
