Red Raiders Fall To Bethany In Season Opener

Northwestern College lost its season opening doubleheader to Bethany this afternoon, 4-3 and 12-4 in five innings.

Game One:

Northwestern held a 3-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning but the Swedes scored three off four hits and a Red Raider error to earn the come-from-behind win.

Bethany catcher Elizabeth Endsley hit a two-out, walkoff single, scoring pinchrunner Erin Newport from third off Northwestern pitcher Morgan Means (0-1). The Swedes began the inning with three consecutive singles, scoring one run, and then a Red Raider miscue led to the hosts third run of the game.

Northwestern scored a run in the third, fourth and fifth innings and totaled eight hits in its season debut. Mons Figueroa scored the Red Raider first run after she led off with a walk and came around to score on a Swedes error off a ball hit by Madison Beaver.

The Red Raiders made it 2-0 when Jessica Sandbulte hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring Jensen Boger who led off the fourth inning with a triple. Jaclyn Smith smacked an RBI double, scoring Bri Petrauskas, for Northwestern's final run in the fifth.

Smith and Petrauskas both had two hits to lead the Red Raiders at the plate.

Kayla Tindall pitched four scoreless innings, giving up three hits and no walks, as the team's starter. Means pitched the final 2.2 innings, giving up seven hits and four runs.

Deanna Van Poucke led the Swedes with three hits and Tiffany Dennison picked up the complete game win, giving up eight hits and two earned runs.

Game Two

Northwestern mustered just three hits in its 12-4 game two loss to Bethany.

Petrauskas went 2-for-3 and scored a run while Cheyenne Wilcke added an RBI double.

Tindall picked up the loss, giving up nine hits and seven earned runs in three innings. Means came in to pitch the final 1.2 innings and gave up four hits and two runs.
