Red Raiders Open 2017 Season This Weekend

Game Time...Northwestern College will make its season debut this weekend with a pair of doubleheaders against teams from Kansas. The Red Raiders open against Bethany in Lindsborg, Kan. on Friday afternoon at 2/4pm. They will then play Benedictine on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 1/3pm in Atchison, Kan.

 Bethany Swedes: 2-0   Head Coach: Laura Moreno (3rd year)

Bethany is off to a 2-0 start to the 2017 season, earning a sweep over Langston (Okla.) 14-2 and 12-7, last weekend in Oklahoma.

Moreno returns six starters and 10 players from a 2016 team that finished fourth in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference with a 16-6 record, 29-26 overall. Moreno was an assistant for the Swedes from 2013-15 prior to being promoted to head coach. In 2016, Bethany sported a .385 team batting average and set the school record with 56 home runs.

Four all-conference players return to the batting line-up:

Tiffany Dennison returns as the top pitcher and earned all-conference honors: 

2017-1-0, 2.80 ERA (last year: 11-6 3.51 ERA)

 Benedictine Ravens: 0-0    Head Coach: Dana Goss (4th year)

Goss returns 12 players from a 2016 team that finshed 13-9 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference, 25-21 overall. They tied Avila for fifth place in the HAAC standings and totaled 20+ wins for the eighth straight season. Benedictine was picked eighth out of 14 teams in the HAAC preseason poll. 

Kellie Bachkora is the top returning hitter, earning all-conference honors after hitting .392 last season. Sarah Methvin, also an all-conference pick in 2016, hit .343 with six home runs and 22 RBIs. Courtney Parker (.323) and Sierra Esau (.322) also return after earning all-conference honors. 

Nikki Mcneil returns as the Raven's top pitcher, going 11-8 with a 3.31 ERA in 120.2 innings.

Northwestern College: 0-0    Head Coach: Chris Nachtigall (6th year)

Nachtigall begins his sixth season as the Red Raiders head coach and returns six starters and all three pitchers from a 2016 team that finished 8-14 in the GPAC, 20-29 overall. Nachtigall owns a 56% win percentage and 133 wins during his tenure. 

Jessica Rayela returns and was the team's top hitter in 2016, batting .353 with seven home runs and 28 RBIS. Mons Figueroa hit .324 with four home runs and 18 RBIs last year and returns as the team's catcher. Both players earned all-conference honors.
