Late First Half Run Pushes Red Raiders Past Mount Marty

No. 4 Northwestern College converted seven of its final nine field goal attempts to spark a late first half run to break away from upset-minded Mount Marty 87-67 in a conference match-up played tonight in Yankton, S.D.

The Red Raiders improve to 9-1 in the GPAC, 19-1 overall. Mount Marty drops to 0-9 in conference play, 4-14 overall.

Colton Kooima led Northwestern with 23 points, seven rebounds and six assists and Justin Van Kalsbeek poured in a career-high 19 points to go with six boards, going 7-for-8 from the field. Derek Buysse and Nathan Wedel were also in double figures with 17 and 15 points, respectively.

How It Happened...

Scoring was hard to come by for both teams early as they played to a 6-6 tie after six-plus minutes of play. The game remained tight, with four ties over a nine-minute stretch, as Northwestern led by as much as four but Mount Marty kept in contact.

Tied at 24, Northwestern outscored the Lancers 14-5 over the final four minutes to take a 38-29 lead at the break. Kooima began the surge with a three-point play and scored nine points during the run. Buysse knocked down a three-point and scored the other five for NWC.

A Wedel jumper put the Red Raiders in front by 13 (42-29) but Mount Marty responded with an 18-9 run to get within four, 51-47, at the 12:30 mark.

Northwestern, however, quickly pushed the lead back up to double digits behind the play of Van Kalsbeek, who scored seven consecutive points during a 9-1 run to take a 60-48 lead.

Another scoring run, this time a 7-0 surge, put the game away late as Northwestern ended with a 20-point win, 87-67.

By the Numbers...

Northwestern shot 52% for the game and 33% (5/15) from the three-point line; Mount Marty shot 42% from the field, 37% (11/30) from the arc.

The Red Raiders flexed their muscle on the boards, outrebounding Mount Marty 41-25; they pulled down 11 on the offensive side.

Kooima moved past Jeff Kraayenbrink for 19th place in career-scoring, now with 1,417pts

O.J. Thok paced Mount Marty with 24 points and Patrick Ciganovic chipped in 13.
