Tough Shooting Night Dooms Red Raiders

Northwestern could not overcome a tough shooting night in losing to third-ranked Dakota Wesleyan 71-57 at the Corn Palace. The Red Raiders had their three game win streak snapped and drop to 3-5 in the GPAC, 10-6 overall.

The Red Raiders shot 32% in the first half and just 37% for the game, matching their lowest field goal percentage of the season (vs Doane). T.J. Buyert scored a team-high 13 points coming off the bench, knocking down 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Nathan Wedel chipped in 12 points and Colton Kooima was also in double figures with 11.

The game was close early and Northwestern led 12-11 after a three-pointer by Kooima at the 12-minute mark. Dakota Wesleyan, however, scored the next nine points and pushed the lead to 14 at the break, 39-25. The Tigers closed the half on a 14-4 run, sparked by four straight three-pointers, two by Kris Menning.

The Red Raiders never threatened in the second half as the host Tigers extended their lead to as many as 25 points. A late NWC run made it a 14-point game at the end, 71-57.

Northwestern held a 41-32 advantage on the boards, led by Jordan Baker with 12 points. The sophomore just missed a double-double by a point, scoring nine for the game, and dished out a team-high four assists.

Dakota Wesleyan shot 43% for the game and from the three-point arc, draining 16-of-37 three-point attempts. Menning led the Tigers with 25 points, connecting on seven three-pointers. Jade Miller was the only other DWU player in double figures with 17.

Northwestern will head to Seward, Neb. to play Concordia on Saturday, Jan. 10 at 4pm.
