Red Raiders Drop Second Straight

A big second half run broke open a close game and gave Dakota Wesleyan a 102-85 win over Northwestern in a conference match-up played tonight in Mitchell, S.D. The Red Raiders lost their second straight game and drop to eighth in the conference with a 7-10 record, 14-13 overall. 

Tied at 56 with just under 16-minutes left to go, Dakota Wesleyan went on a 21-4 run, sparked by three-straight three-pointers, to break open a close game. The Tigers defense was stellar as well, holding Northwestern without a field goal for over six minutes until T.J. Buyert knocked down a three-pointer with 8:26 left. 

Four straight free throws by Zack Leeper, followed by Buyert's three-pointer put Northwestern back to within 10 (77-67) and the lead stayed around 10-12 points until DWU pulled away at the very end. 

Northwestern shot 44% for the game but struggled from the perimeter (25%), especially in the second half when they went 1-for-10. Joey Habtemariam scored a team-high 18 points and Jordan Baker netted 17, going 7-for-11 from the field. Leeper added 13 and Rob Gill put in 10. Northwestern was outrebounded 47-36, giving up 13 offensive rebounds, but committed just six turnovers. 

Dakota Wesleyan shot 52% and was led by Jalen Voss with 33 points and 13 rebounds. Trae Bergh added 20 and Kris Menning put in 17. DWU went 13-for-25 (52%) from the three-point line for the game. 

Northwestern travels to Seward, Neb. to play Concordia on Saturday, Feb. 15.
