Red Raiders Earn First GPAC Win

Northwestern College earned its first conference win with an 87-64 victory over Mount Marty in a men's basketball match-up played in the Bultman Center. The Red Raiders improve to 1-3 in the GPAC, 7-6 overall. Mount Marty drops to 0-3 in conference play, 0-7 overall. 

Northwestern shot 51% for the game and had six players score in double figures. Jordan Baker, Joey Habtemariam and Tyler Goldston all poured in 13 while Justin Van Kalsbeek netted a career-high 12. Zack Leeper added 11 and Bryce Moss scored 10 points coming off the bench.

The Red Raiders led from the start, opening up a 10-point lead (19-9) after a lay-up by Tyler Goldston. The lead ranged from 4-10 points for the rest of the first half with Northwestern up 43-36 at the break. 

Justin Van Kalsbeek converted a short jumper to give Northwestern a 55-43 at the 15-minute mark and the they stayed in front  by double digits the rest of the way. 

Northwestern owned a 42-28 advantage on the glass and made 23-of-40 free throws. 

Mount Marty shot 36% for the game and was led  by Alex Irvine and Bud Smith with 13 points each.

Both teams struggled from the perimeter, shooting a combined 4-for-32 from beyond the arc. There were also 54 fouls called with four players fouling out. 

Northwestern will head to Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday, Dec. 7.
