Men's Basketball Clinches GPAC Championship

Fifth-ranked Northwestern clinched the 2013 GPAC regular season championship with an 86-83 victory over Dakota Wesleyan Wednesday night at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, S.D. It marked the seventh straight win for the Red Raiders, who improve to 16-3 in the GPAC, 22-5 overall.

Northwestern captured its eighth regular season title and second in the last three years, also winning it in 2011. They also shared or won the title outright from 2001-05 and 2007. (The GPAC began in the 2000-01 season).

Ben Miller scored 25 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for his ninth double-double of the season. The senior also dished out a team-high five assists. Daniel Van Kalsbeek netted 17 points, going 7-for-13 from the field, before fouling out in the final minute. Both players passed former All-American Kevin Van Veldhuizen (1984-88) in the career scoring list and moved into ninth (Miller-1,721) and eighth place (Van Kalsbeek-1,722) respectively.

Northwestern ran off to an 11-2 lead during the opening minutes but Dakota Wesleyan scored 20 of the next 22 points to grab a 22-13 advantage at the eight minute mark. The Tigers stretched the lead to as much as 10 (32-22) on a three-pointer by Kris Menning with 3:30 to go but Northwestern outscored the hosts 10-5 over the final minutes to cut it to 37-32 at the break.

The Red Raiders quickly tied it at 40 and took the lead for good (44-40) on a basket by Levi Ettleman and free throws by Miller. They pushed the lead to as much as 10 (59-49) at the 10-minute mark but DWU rallied and made it a four-point game with two minutes left.

Following an NWC time-out, Miller and Rob Gill scored on back-to-back possessions and the Red Raiders held off DWU with clutch free throw shooting down the stretch.

Northwestern shot 49% for the game and 25% from the three-point line. Ettleman scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half while Zack Leeper was also in double figures with 11 points. The Red Raiders were outrebounded 37-35.

DWU shot 44% for the game and was led by Carde Pennington with 19 points and Aireus Stephenson netted 17.

Northwestern will close the regular season at home against Midland on Feb. 16. Tip-off for the senior day/parent's day game will be at 4:00pm.
