Seventh-ranked Northwestern held off Dakota Wesleyan 77-74 in a GPAC men's basketball match-up held Wednesday night in the Bultman Center. Northwestern won its third straight game and improved to 8-2 in conference play, 14-4 overall.

Northwestern closed the first half on a 15-4 run to turn a 10-point deficit into a 35-34 lead at the break. Bryce Moss netted seven of the Red Raiders' points during the run.

The Red Raiders maintained its advantage over the first 10 minutes of the second half, leading by seven (57-50) after a three-point play by Stu Goslinga. Dakota Wesleyan battled back with a 10-2 run and grabbed a 60-59 advantage after a basket by Luke Bamberg with 8:16 left to play. The lead was short-lived as Northwestern came back with a 9-2 surge and held a six-point lead (68-62) with 5:30 left.

The visiting Tigers did not go away, however, and went on a 10-3 run, taking a 72-71 lead with 1:23 left on a pair of free throws by Bamberg. A field goal by Daniel Van Kalsbeek gave the Red Raiders the lead back for good and both Van Kalsbeek and Ben Miller hit a pair of free throws in the final seconds to preserve the win.

Northwestern shot 47% for the game, 64% in the second half, and went 25-for-31 from the free throw line (81%). Miller scored 19 points and pulled down seven rebounds while Van Kalsbeek also scored 19 points despite battling foul trouble throughout. Goslinga added 14 points before fouling out with four minutes to go. Northwestern outrebounded DWU 36-31, led by Zack Leeper with nine.

Dakota Wesleyan was led by Mike Lee with 20 points and Carde Pennington scored 17.

Northwestern heads to Lincoln, Neb. to play Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 4:00pm.
