The Northwestern College Men’s Basketball Program has hired two former Red Raiders to serve on the coaching staff. Red Raider head coach Kris Korver has announced the hiring of Mike Vorwald as a varsity assistant coach and Ben Miller as the junior varsity coach. Vorwald will also work with our Sports Information Department.
Vorwald played the point guard position for the Red Raiders from 2010-12. He dished out 133 assists during his freshman year and accumulated 225 total assists (25th most all time) while in a Raider uniform. Vorwald was a part of two Raider teams that earned NAIA Division II National Tournament bids. He completed his degree from the University of Sioux Falls in 2014. and has taught 3rd grade and coached baseball and basketball back in his hometown in Worthington, Minn. “I am excited to be a part of the winning tradition here at Northwestern which also focuses on building up Godly young men” commented Vorwald. “I am also excited to have a chance to grow in my own faith while daily being involved in Red Raider Basketball. I look forward to recruiting and look forward to investing in the lives of the young men in this special journey we call Northwestern.”
Miller was a standout point forward for the Red Raiders from 2010-13. He helped lead the Red Raiders to three NAIA Division II National Tournaments, two GPAC regular season championships and one GPAC tournament championship. Miller earned All-American honors during his junior year (3rd team) and senior year (1st team) while being voted the GPAC Player of the Year after his senior season. Miller ranks among the Northwestern career leaders in several stat categories, including points (1803-7th), rebounds (915 rebounds-4th), and assists (447-7th). Miller has worked with the family business in Volga, S.D. and coached at Sioux Valley High School the last three years. Miller’s wife, Larissa, is a pharmacist in Northwest Iowa and they are blessed with a beautiful daughter, Avery. “I am excited for the opportunity to come back to Northwestern and be a part of the NWC coaching staff,” said Miller. “I am looking forward to coaching and serving the young men in this program in the same way my coaches have coached and served me.”
Said head coach Kris Korver, “We are blessed to have Mike and Ben join our coaching staff. They are talented, passionate, and have excellent basketball IQ’s. Both guys are hungry to invest in young people and to use basketball as the tool. They are already doing a fantastic job with our current players and hitting the road recruiting. They will be a huge asset to our program.”
Coach Rick Clark will continue his duties as an assistant coach and Ryan Christy will serve as a student coach.
