The 2014 NAIA baseball preseason poll came out today and Northwestern earned votes in the poll, picking up 24, ranking as the 32nd highest team.The Red Raiders were the top ranked team in the GPAC and are coming off of a 2013 season in which they went 31-19 overall and 17-3 in the GPAC to win the regular season championship. NWC also won the GPAC Tournament championship and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round as the four seed at the Oklahoma City site.
The Red Raiders return six position player starters; Tony Schultz, Cody Groskreutz, Erik Widener, Mitch Peschon, Micah Linn, and Davis Bloemendaal. Schultz was a second team All-GPAC catcher in 2012. Groskreutz has been a two time All-GPAC honorable mention and won a Gold Glove in 2013 at first base. Widener earned the GPAC Gold Glove at second base in 2013. Peschon was an All-GPAC honorable mention in 2012. Linn earned All-GPAC honorable mention honors in 2013. Bloemendaal was a First Team All-GPAC outfielder in 2013 and an honorable mention in 2011.
Northwestern also returns five pitchers who earned All-GPAC honors in 2013. Tyler Stuerman leads the staff, earning All-American honors in 2013 as well as being named the GPAC Pitcher of the Year. Ryan Brasser has been recognized three times by the GPAC, earning second team honors in 2013 and honorable mention honors in 2011 and 2012. Matt Piocos, Josh Turner, and Isaac Horigan were all named All-GPAC honorable mentions in 2013. The Northwestern pitching staff set a school record for strikeouts in a season last year with 308.
NWC opens their season on Feb. 14 in Topeka.
